Heidi’s Story: How a Precious Promise Changed Her Heart

A Precious Moment in Our Home

Yesterday, something precious happened in our home — a little victory that perfectly shows how our Precious Promises scripture songs help children hide God’s Word in their hearts and choose obedience with joy.

A Little Heart Struggling

My four-year-old daughter, Heidi, was getting dressed to go play outside. Earlier, she had made a craft for Daddy and left blue scissors and paper scraps all over my bedroom floor.

As I walked out, I gently reminded her, “Heidi, we need to pick up the mess in my bedroom before we go outside.”

Immediately I heard her wail from down the hall: “But I don’t want to!” I decided not to rush in — instead, I quietly went to my room to finish getting ready.

A Song in Her Heart

Then, through her little tears, I heard Heidi begin to sing one of our Precious Promises scripture songs — her favorite:

“My son, keep your father’s command,
And do not forsake the law of your mother.
Bind them continually upon your heart…”

(Proverbs 6:20–23, NKJV)

She sang the entire song, word for word.

When I came out of my room, I found her in my bedroom, happily picking up every scrap of paper and putting the scissors away — with a big smile on her face, saying to herself, “This goes in the trash… the scissors go in the drawer…”

I asked her, “Heidi, a minute ago you were crying because you didn’t want to clean up. Now you’re picking up happily. What happened?”

She looked at me with bright eyes and simply said, “I started singing my song.”

Why We Created Precious Promises

Over the last couple of years, our family has been creating Precious Promises — a series of beautiful, full-color books filled with carefully chosen Bible verses and matching scripture songs. These simple songs make it easy for children to hide God’s Word in their hearts and remember it in real-life moments — just like Heidi did.

This is exactly what I dreamed of when we began: that God’s Word would be there for our children, guiding them in small choices and helping them grow in joyful obedience.

I didn’t have to scold her. I didn’t have to be the “bad guy.” Instead, the scriptures and songs she learned through Precious Promises did the work — God brought them to her mind, spoke to her heart, and she chose to obey cheerfully.

His Word never returns void.
